I started writing sandcastle tasks, but I'm having second thoughts. I use the SandCastle Help File Builder (http://www.codeplex.com/SHFB) to configure the help files for various projects I work on. The obvious benefit is the NDoc style UI which I find really helpful. The SHFB project provides a command line tool whereby you simply run an exe and pass the shfb file, with a few optional parameters.

So what benefit would additional tasks that interface directly with SandCastle provide? I think the SHFB provides an efficient mechanism for generating help files. It may be helpful to provide a small wrapper task, but I see this as a small benefit over a simple exec out to the console app.

Am I missing something? How do others feel?

Closed Issue: FTDTFSVersion fails every other build attempt if BuildNumber is updated

When I include the following on the FTDTFSVersion task
<Output TaskParameter="Version" PropertyName="BuildNumber"/>

the build number does not increment properly and every other build attempt fails with "TF42064: The build number '1.1.0225.14' already exists for build definition '\RXD_RXG_PTF\RXP Eventing V2 (CheckinBuild)'."

In the above example this should have been build 1.1.0225.15 since the LastGoodBuildNumber and LastBuildNumber were 1.1.0225.14. Once it fails it records the LastBuildNumber as "RXP Eventing V2 (CheckinBuild)_20080813.14" which for some reason allows the subsequent build to succeed. Attempting build 16 fails and when requested again it succeeds. Build 17 then fails and subsequently succeeds.

I would not recommend using the (or any) task to update the BuildNumber property. If you look at the sample here (http://freetodev.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!EC3C8F2028D842D5!547.entry), you will see that I use

• <Output TaskParameter="Version" PropertyName="NewVersion"/>

Rather than

• <Output TaskParameter="Version" PropertyName="BuildNumber"/>

If you have any failures, then you are going to see clashes like you are seeing below. The task is designed to simply update the version, not change the Build Number, which I prefer to leave at the generated BuildDefinition_Date.Revision, e.g. RXP Eventing V2 (CheckinBuild)_20080813.14. I used to use it to update the build number (and then DropLocation etc), but it caused too many issues.

From Dean: "I have a code policy requiring a code reviewer for checkin. To do this via the TF command, you set the "notes" property of the command to the code reviewer. Unfortunately I do not see any way to
do this via the Checkin Task. Is it possible to add a "notes" attribute to the checkin task?"

No problemo, I'm happy to support such a good initiative!

I attached an update to the iis7binding class to support https bindings with a certificate. And I added some comments to the class cause its kinda magic working with certificate hashes and binding info strings :-)

Hi,

First of all: nice work! Especially the IIS 7 tasks are very useful.

I made a few enhancements to these tasks and made a new task: Iis7Binding. I used the 14830 release as baseline, so maybe the tasks are outdated already.

Hopefully you can use them. I only updated the sources and didn't update the samples / documentation.

Changelog:

Iis7Website:
• New action: modify, change the physical path of an existing website
• New action: info: gets the physical path of a website

Iis7AppPool:
• New property: MaxWorkerProcesses setting
• New property value: PeriodicRestartTime, -2: disable periodic restarts
• New properties: RestartScheduleHours + RestartScheduleMinutes, set a restart schedule for the apppool

Iis7Binding:
• New class to add of modify iis7 bindings
